When to Know You’re Ready for an Ultra (And When You’re Not)
If you’re asking yourself, “Am I ready for an ultra?” here’s the truth…
Technically speaking, an ultra marathon is anything longer than a marathon. So if you ran 42.3 km, congratulations. You ran an ultra.
But all jokes aside, when runners talk about “ultras,” we’re usually referring to races that start at 50 km and go up from there. Distances commonly include 50 km, 50 miles, 100 km, and 100 miles. Of course there are crazier distances too!
For most runners attempting their first ultra, I usually recommend starting with a 50 km. It’s long enough to introduce the unique challenges of ultrarunning without the overwhelming time commitment of longer distances.
That said, it isn’t a hard rule. Some runners jump straight to 80 km or 100 km races. If you do go that route, the biggest adjustment is simple. Give yourself more time to train.
Ultras reward patience.
